Suriname is a small country located on the northeastern coast of South America, bordered by Guyana to the west, French Guiana to the east, Brazil to the south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the north. It has a population of approximately 600,000 people and its capital city is Paramaribo. Suriname was a Dutch colony until gaining independence in 1975, and Dutch is still widely spoken there today. Suriname has a diverse ethnic makeup, with significant populations of people of African, Indian, Javanese, Amerindian, Chinese, and Dutch origin. The country's economy is heavily reliant on exports of minerals such as gold, bauxite, and oil, as well as agriculture and fishing. Despite its small size, Suriname is known for its lush rainforests, wildlife habitats, and ecotourism opportunities.
